Blood Orange, not Lemonade

Released back in Oct 2012, Losing You is a juicy summer disco hymn; Solange’s sorrowful lyrics are soothed only by the sounds of sunshine, poppin’ fabrics and bold lipstick.

Written by Dev Hynes and Knowles, with production helmed by the former under his pseudonym Blood Orange along with Kevin Barnes.

A totally underrated beverage. Drink it in!

More than a Sunday Surfshirt

These kids are homegrown and Sydney based and I'm proud as effin' punch.

Indie outfit, Winston Surfshirt initially kicked off as a solo project. The band has now united the efforts of six local musicians with super diverse backgrounds to become a cult followed collective. The result is an infectious sunshine soul hip hop beat with honey like vocals to melt your panties off. Hot diggity DAMN.

Their first single 'Be About You' was released in January this year and reeks of insane raw talent and years of potentially bodacious tunes to come.

The official music video winks ever so cheekily to the leggy visual montage of Chromeo's Fancy Footwork album cover, yet their unique blend of soul and hip-hop takes the audio to new levels of sex.

Think Tame Impala meets Macklemore meets Outkast. GEDDITINTAYA.

Most Beautiful Object in South Africa for 2017

large_design_indaba_sankara_hero.jpg

If the incredibly bold geometric colour block graphics of the handmade Sankara Rug by textile designer and fashion rebel Nkuli Mlangeni don't grab you - discovering the story and intent behind Mlangeni's work surely will.

Growing up just outside of Johannesburg, Mlangeni studied in Switzerland before returning to South Africa to pursue revitalization of the dying art form of weaving using traditional African and Peruvian techniques. Mlangeni has made it her goal to inspire the interest of younger people in order to preserve this artistic practice - she also feels inspired to affect change by combining things she's passionate about: social revolutions, contemporary design, handicrafts, under-told African narratives and black aesthetics. Mlangeni's work is an expression of southern Africa’s modernity, as well as its rich history of craft.

Her incredible intention and fierce talent has snagged her the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at the 2017 Design Indaba festival.

Design Indaba is a series of events and an online publication founded and run by Interactive Africa under the slogan "A better world through creativity". The festival is held annually in South Africa to showcase a cast of the world’s best creative minds, sharing inimitable inspiration, new perspectives and universal solutions.

Watch the interview with the designer herself responding to the nomination honour. A true SA gem.

These exquisite handmade artisanal rugs are made to order and available for purchase through Mlangeni's website platform theninevites.net - get on that! And order me two!

Learning Lessons on Still Life

London based singer & producer Aaron Taylor released his debut EP last year called 'Still Life' and it's bangin'.

Taylor's standout single 'Lesson Learnt' fuses eclectic beats reminiscent of Pharrell with the smooth neo-soul brass and falsetto of D'Angelo. Marrying his tunes with notions of art and philosophy, Taylor's unique sound has already been picked up and used on an Apple advert. Word.

A bowl of delicious soulful goodness for breakfast. Eat up!

Spotify has creeped you hard and knows you listen to Bittersweet Symphony when it's raining

Spotify x AccuWeather have launched Climatune, a site that creates playlists based on weather and listening data. And as a pure sucker for name mash ups and candy cute app interfaces, Climatune punches hard.

The site is a collaborative result of a year long research study that looked at the impact weather has on the music people listen to. Results found that snowy days encourage more instrumental music; sunny days typically encourage listening to happier and higher-energy music; and rainy days bring lower-energy, sadder-sounding music with more acoustic vs. electronic sounds. Spotify data researcher Ian Anderson says there is a clear connection between what's in the skies and what's on users' play queues.

If Melbourne weather is anything to base a playlist on, I might be in for some majorly erratic music mixes. Find your own weather mood here: weather.withspotify.com

Jamiroquai's Futuristic Comeback

After a 7 year hiatus, Jay Kay emerges with this heavily cyber-electronic, post-apocalyptic single.
The band is set to release an LP, due out via Virgin EMI on March 31.

The video, directed from the talented Charlie Lightening, is as every bit as electric as the funk fuelled tune.

According to a statement from the band posted by Pitchfork;
"The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings."

We just can't seem to get enough of Jay Kay's revitalised styling of his iconic headwear. The future is yours Jamiroquai. #groovybaby

Thundercat FEAT. Kenny Loggins & Michael McDonald: Show You The Way →

Ok. So. Wow. The kings of yacht rock are BACK.

In a simmering soulful collaboration, Thundercat (aka Stephen Bruner) has just released the first single; 'Show You The Way' off his third full length album, 'Drunk' - with the infamous Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins - and it's all sorts of Macca's soft serve kinda smooth.

It's not quite what a fool might believe, but shit, it's pretty close to the danger zone.

So it's been well over six months since this one emerged from my favourite hip

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we stand and graciously breathe. I pay my respects to all Indigenous Elders past and present. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, mother earth of First Nations.
