Problem statement
People throw away 44.7 million tonnes of tech each year and government-accredited phone recycling service MobileMuster also estimates there are a whopping 23.5m unused phones stored in homes around Australia.
The global refurbished and used mobile phones market size was valued at $52 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach $145.9 billion by 2031. As the costs of living continue to rise, we also see 77% Australia’s actively trying to save money.
Considering the damning environmental statistics and the rising demand of Australian’s turning to more affordable devices, Belong saw great market potential for product diversification, that perfectly aligned to our company values of sustainability.

Launched in partnership with Kingfisher in July 2022, Belong's Second Life Shop offers both refurbished iPhones and Android smartphones that are designed to complement our mobile and data plans.

My role
Ensured consistency of design and language:
UX/UI Product Design page flows in Figma, collaborating directly with our internal Content Writer
Managed the implementation of our Design System, handing our component UI Kit to the agency design team to guide the aesthetics and component design
Ran an iterative review process and open feedback loops to keep the team aligned to the project vision, our UI language and the digital brand
Gave design direction and feedback to agency team for UX wires, accessibility and any need for new UI components.
Collaborated with Brand, Marketing and Customer Service Support:
Co-ordinated the design collaboration between our internal design teams and the external design agency
Influenced the strategy behind the product name and positioning
Worked directly with the Service teams to map the strategy for customer support
Connected relevant stakeholders when necessary for smoother delivery
Reported internally on status, progress and quality updates to senior stakeholders
Faciliated internal and external teamwork:
Drove SEO as part of the Content Strategy to ensure optimisation of organic search
Raised timing risks regarding Apple & Samsung third party approvals process
Ensured AA accessibility compliance was accepted as part of initial project scope
Gave advice and direction to the agency FED development team to help them understand AA accessibility requirements
Engaged our internal QE tester to complete functional end-to-end and accessibility testing to confirm functional usability and compliance
Organised quality assurance review sessions with all stakeholders to gather final feedback prior to go live
